Lafayette Scale Modelers do well at R-12 show

Mike Kloppenburg sent in this report from the show:

The LaFayette Scale Modelers made their presence know. Only 2 of our club members showed for the event, John Jernigan and myself. John walked home with three 3rd place awards out of four models he brought. His Tamiya 1/48 UHU 219, Easy 8 1/35 Sherman and 1/32 Hasegawa Me-109 all received awards. I did real well- I placed with my “Flight 19″ in 1st place and Best Diorama, 75 mm Roman Pegaso 1st place figure and Best Figure, and one of my female figures took Best of Show. Who would have guessed?

Way to go Mike and John! Below are a few pics from the show, and Mike has placed quite a few more here.

March Club Meeting Notes

clubmeet3-14002.jpgThe March Club meeting took place Friday, March 14th, in our usual location, the upper room in Hayes Hobby House. Sadly, I was not able to be there. However, I have heard from a fellow club member that after several rousing choruses of Barry Manilow’s classic hit “Copacabana”, the members settled down and displayed some of their modeling work.

No really, I’m not making that up. And there are pictures to prove it. The modeling display, that is.

The singing will just have to go down in history as urban legend. A myth really. Read the rest of this entry »

Member Build: Mike Kloppenburg’s 1/48 Hasegawa F-104C Starfighter

This is the 1/48 scale Hasegawa F-104C kit. This is a project that Mike Starling started. He wanted to build all of the aircraft on one decal sheet that he had. He recruited Bob Fisher, John Jernigan, Carry, Mike and myself in this build-off. They were all Viet Nam aircraft that were painted in the South East Asia paint scheme. It is nice kit to build there is however a major mistake in the instructions. It shows the instrument panel to be installed after the fuselage is put together. If you follow this you will find yourself trying to pry the two halves apart and shoe horning it in place.

Member Build: Adam Coleman’s Argentine Marine LVTP-7

img_0660.JPGPlease enjoy my Argentine Marine LVTP-7 from the Falklands invasion on 2nd of April 1982. It’s the Academy kit in 1:35 - which is a perfect fit for the configuration used by the Argentines. The decals are from Condor decals and the weathering is created using the Tamiya Model Make-up. On the day of the invasion the machines were in the water then onto a road in fairly short order, thus they were quite clean. Overall - a nice build to do, and with some minor effort makes itself into a kit that depicts an accurate version of the machine used that day.

Meeting report: February

Terry Swanner demonstrates using artists oils to achieve a woodgrain effect.

Lafayette Scale Modelers met Friday, February 8th for their monthly club meeting. The meeting took place in the regular meeting place, in the upstairs room at Hayes Hobby House. If you’re in the Fayetteville/Fort Bragg area, please drop by and join us next month. We meet the second Friday of every month at 7:00 PM.

The primary business of the evening was discussing the club’s plans to put in a bid for hosting a Regional IPMS show in 2009. Kerry Brenstuhl and Mike Starling volunteered to co-chair the event committee, though they did specify that they must be called the “Dual Combo Profi-Pack Chairmen” at all times. Everyone approved the resolution by saying “harrumph”.

After handling the business of the evening, Terry Swanner gave an excellent demonstration of how to use artists oils over a base of acrylics to achieve a wood grain effect.

Several club members brought in some of their more recent work. Here’s some pics of their efforts. Read the rest of this entry »

December club meeting: MiG-21 Madness

In the better late than never category…..

100_0779.jpgThe club’s December meeting was a very special one, with a great display of models from the club’s MiG-21 Group Build, a gift swap, and dinner afterwards. Everyone was a bit intimidated by a visit from the Kremlin’s official MiG Group Build Inspector for the KGB (Kornballski Groupski Builderski), Comrade Colonel Mikhail Starlingskisopov. After he spent some time inspecting the MiG builds, however, he declared it all “Goodski”, and withdraw all reservations on a one-way train to Siberia.

After the meeting, the group headed over to dinner at one of the local Chinese buffets.

p3130034.jpgI have been back into modeling for the past 8 years after a “little” break. I like most genre but have been doing modern aircraft lately. I’m on the hunt for a good camera to take close ups with so I can get some of my other stuff on. I’m a retired paratrooper from California.

(Kerry also likes candlelit dinners and long walks on the beach and hopes to meet the perfect kit one day…. Ed.) Read the rest of this entry »
